Every connection has a health that tells you whether its devices can be trusted right now. It is checked when you link or sign in again, once a day, when a connection is turned back on, and whenever you choose Check now. Everyday use counts too: a vendor that keeps failing changes the health without waiting for a check.
The states
- Not checked yet: just created or just turned back on; the first check has not finished.
- Healthy: the last check passed.
- Degraded: a check failed, or the vendor failed three times within an hour during normal use. For Google Home, it also means the linking phone has not reported for 24 hours. It recovers by itself when a check passes or the vendor (or the phone) answers again.
- Needs sign-in: the vendor rejected the sign-in, key or token. Devices on this connection are unavailable until someone signs in again.
- Disabled: someone turned the connection off with Disable. Its devices are hidden and it is not checked until it is turned back on.
A vendor that is slowing requests down, or is briefly unavailable, does not change the health. You see it in the check result instead.
What happens when it is not healthy
When a connection becomes Degraded or Needs sign-in, the people with Manage IoT Connections and the organization's owners are told. The same problem on the same connection is not repeated for 24 hours, and the notice is withdrawn when the connection recovers.
Where you see it
Go to Settings → Devices (IoT) → Connections. The strip at the top counts connections by health. When some need a new sign-in, a button such as Fix 1 sign-in shows only those; Show all brings the rest back.
Each card shows the health, the last sync, the last success and the last problem with its reason. Checks opens the last 50 checks from the past 30 days: when each ran, how it was started, the result, and how long it took.
What you can do
- Check now runs a check at once. A connection can be checked once a minute. Sync devices looks for new devices.
- Rename changes the name people see.
- Sign in again appears on a connection that needs a new sign-in; see How to Relink a Connection.
- Disable turns a connection off without removing it. Enable turns it back on and checks it.
- A message you do not understand is explained in Fixing a Connection Problem.
